It’s so sad that I am this excited to go back home. Coalinga was never this appealing before. It’ll be nice to get away from the city for a while and hang out with family, even if it’s only for a week.

“If you’re comfortable with yourself, then it’s sexy. Maybe people think I look sexy because I feel sexy. I am a very liberated person that way. I’m very comfortable with my sexuality, my body, my face - well, sometimes I’m not comfortable with my face, but it’s stuck there and there’s nothing I can do about it.”

I loves her.

For the past two weeks I was having trouble finding a place to stay, apartments in the city are all over priced, everything in Queens that I could find on short notice was too far out, and Saturday May 19th was approaching with quickness. For a second there I thought I wasn’t going to have a place to stay, and my flight back to Cali wasn’t until June 2nd.  With finals, new job, and apartment hunting I became an emotional, stressed out wreck. I looked sloppy, wore nothing but tights and sweats and wasn’t pleasant to be around.

On Friday, the Saturday before I was to move out of my dorms, my mom called me and was like call this number, they have a place for you to stay for 2 weeks until you come to Cali. So I call them they give me an address and I end up on the edge of Brooklyn by Coney Island in Sheepshead Bay. I meet up with this nice desi guy who gives me a one bed room beach house to stay in. Doesn’t ask for a fee or anything just says here’s a place for 2 weeks if you need anything this is my cell phone number just call. Next door is a Best Western which is mine and it serves breakfast from 7-10. All hotel amenities are yours to use. So not only am I happy at this point that I have a place to stay, but I have a whole house by the beach to myself!!!

I call my mom later that day and ask her how she knows this guy and she says, “you remember that old Indian couple that used to run the motels in Coalinga?” and I was like, “yea.”

She goes on to tell me how this old couple had a daughter who was very fond of my dad because when she could be close to her parents and take care of them in their old age my dad did. He would take them to their doctor appointments and drive them to their daughters house a couple of hours away when they wanted to visit. I remember one time when his wife was sick and my mother would make them dinner and bring it to them so they could eat. Well, it turns out that the coupled moved to the east coast somewhere to live with their son, and the old man passed a few months ago. His daughter still keeps in touch with my parents every now and then, and it just popped into my dad’s head Friday that he should call her to find out if she knew anyone in NYC who could help me out. She made a call to her friend in Brooklyn who owned a Best Western and he gave me the side house where employees sometimes stay for a few days.

I just thought this was a cute story. It’s crazy to think how weird connections like this are made. My dad’s good deed over 6 years ago helped me out now.
